This is an image of the Ili River Delta, taken by Operational Land Imager on Landsat 8, on March 7, 2020. The Delta was just starting to get rid of the cold of winter, revealing a large and spectacular image, like a jigsaw puzzle of ponds, reeds and meadows. Even though many of the Delta’s lakes were frozen at that time, the ice on Lake Balkhash was breaking up and we can see swirls of sediment and a beautiful sandy bed.
The Ili River Delta is home for hundreds of animal and plant species, including dozens that are endangered and also rare species, such as goitered gazelle, marbled polecat, dalmatian pelican and red-breasted goose.
