At the moment, the new South African strain has been found in more than 30 countries all across the globe, however, the two cases mentioned above are the first recorded in the United States.
As DHEC has stated, considering that neither one of the two identified cases have any recent travel history and haven’t been in contact with people that traveled recently either, it would be possible “that the variant is spreading in the community following an undetected introduction.”
But this is no surprise for experts, who actually predicted that the new South African strain will make its way to the United States at some point. In fact, Anthony Fauci told Newsweek on January 15 that he believes there’s a chance that the new strain is already in our country, even though we haven’t found it yet.
