At the end of July 2021, CDC published a report that was based on evaluations of the outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 initiated by the large public gatherings in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. Out of 479 cases of COVID-19, 74% of them were breakthrough infections in people who were fully vaccinated with 2 doses of Pfizer or Moderna, or 1 dose of the J&J vaccine.
The genomic analysis concluded that Delta was responsible for 90% of the 133 sequenced breakthrough infections. After this evaluation, CDC recommends the use of masks in indoor public spaces, for both vaccinated and unvaccinated peers. Research following these breakthrough infections and how efficient is the COVID-19 vaccination is needed.
