There are only 100 to 180 Florida panthers in the wild, found in the southern tip of the Sunshine State. Panthers were once found in the southeastern United States, extending from Florida to Mississippi to Arkansas.

Today, the only known breeding population is in southern Florida, where 120 to 130 of the wildcats are left in the wild. Panthers, which belong to the same subspecies as pumas, mountain lions, and cougars— live in forests, prairies, and swamps.
