While the hours of sleep vary greatly, it’s a fact that nearly every creature and animal on our planet enjoys sleep just like humans do. So, it’s kind of obvious that sleep must serve a key purpose for all living things, but science hasn’t discovered it yet.
There are a number of proposed explanations for why we sleep, like the brain needs to be recharged, or decluttered of useless information. But scientists can’t really agree on any theory.
In general, for adults, at least seven hours of sleep per night is needed for proper behavioral and cognitive functions. If an adult doesn’t get enough sleep, it can lead to serious damage, such as vulnerability to attention lapses, reduced cognition, mood shifts and delayed reactions.
In addition to that, sleep deprivation can also lead to higher risk for certain diseases and medical conditions, including obesity, high blood pressure, stroke, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, poor mental health and even early death.
