When it comes to the N95 masks, Fauci explained that even though they’re the most efficient, they have one major disadvantage. And that’s the fact the N95 are not very comfortable and easy to wear, especially when you have to wear them for longer periods of time.
“When I wear [an N95] with patients, David, I have it on like maybe for 40 minutes at a time or half an hour at a time, but to wear it all day could be a bit uncomfortable as opposed to the much more smooth type of either cloth or surgical masks,” Fauci added.
According to Fauci, a good option would be switching between N95 and surgical masks, depending on the difficulty of the situation. A surgical mask is great for lower-risk scenarios. Fauci also recommends modifying the fit of a surgical mask until it becomes almost as efficient as the N95 one.
