Douglas also added that most people want to escape reality by believing in conspiracy theories. In fact, conspiracy theories are very famous countries, including ours. As a 2020 Ipsos poll has shown, one in two Americans believes in the existence of extraterrestrial life and the fact that they’ve already visited our planet several times.

The poll was made before COVID-19, so chances are figures would go up if the survey was repeated again in this context of a global pandemic. As Douglas has explained, people tend to believe more in conspiracy theories in times of crisis, just because they feel isolated, alone, and frustrated, in search of an escape from reality, she added.
