If you have gotten dermal filler injections in your lips, you should know that they could swell after receiving the COVID-19 shot, as Hnida has explained. But this side effect doesn’t just apply to the COVID-19 vaccine, but all vaccines in general, experts say.
As Shilpi Khetarpal, MD, a dermatologist, shared with Clevland Clinic in February, this is not unusual. In fact, these immunologic reactions tend to occur after vaccines, flu shots, dental procedures, and other viral infections.
But they’re not infections or allergies, so there’s nothing to worry about. It’s just your immune system’s response to the vaccine, so its swelling is normal in the areas where you have or had fillers.
And it doesn’t have to be recent procedures. Khetarpal also explained that some people experienced this side effects even years after they’ve gotten filler injections. He even had one patient that had a filler back in 2018, and she still experienced swelling after vaccination.
But that usually happens because fillers tend to last more than we’d think, and even if we can’t see them anymore, they can still be there, he continued saying.
