You can get this parasitic tissue infection called cysticercosis after swallowing food or liquids that contain the eggs of the parasitic tapeworm, also known as Taenia solium. These larvae will infect your brain, muscle tissue, or other parts of your body, resulting in major seizures.
This infection is common in low-income countries and rural areas, in certain areas of Latin America, Asia, and Africa, where a lot of people live in the same household and have poor sanitation. Additionally, Taenia solium can be found in pigs and their feces, so you can also become infected by eating undercooked or even raw pork.
These larvae will become adults in approximately two months, and that when symptoms might begin to appear. In some severe cases, the tapeworm can enter your brain and cause neurocysticercosis. The most common symptoms are headaches, brain swelling, confusion, seizures, difficulty balancing, and in most severe cases, even stroke and death.
Cysts in the eyes are also a thing, even though it happens rarely. It can cause infections, blurry or disturbed vision, as data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shown. In the United States, there are around 1,000 cases identified each year, as data from the National Organization for Rare Disorders has shown.
