There are currently over 31,000 species in the world considered threatened with extinction. Florida panthers, giant sea bass, and red wolf are only a few of the animals identified by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature as critically endangered.
Although our planet boasts incredible biodiversity, 99.9 percent of species that have ever lived on Earth are now extinct. The earth has been estimated to boast between 5.3 million to 1 trillion species worldwide. In 2020, 116,177 species from four categories were assessed by the International Union for Nature Conservation (IUCN): vertebrates, invertebrates, plants, and fungi & protists, and a little over 31,000 were considered to be at risk of extinction.
We consulted data from the IUCN Red List and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to find the most threatened animals, ranging from amphibians to avians. Keep on reading to learn about 20 of America’s most endangered species.
