Due to COVID-19, we were forced to quarantine in an attempt to keep the virus at bay. Therefore, the United States reported an increase in the numbers of online shopping consumers, compared to prior years. The phenomenon is known as the panic purchase, which also leads to an increased number of porch pirates.
The term is used to describe thieves that steal the packages from other people’s porches and has been used since the early 2010s, even though it gained more popularity since COVID-19. As many people switched to online shopping due to the pandemic, Amazon registered 72 percent more cash flow compared to 2019.
And the same goes for the number of package thefts, which has increased by 7 percent since the pandemic emerged in the United States. In fact, more than 35.5 million Americans reported their package being stolen in the past year, resulting in 5.4 billion dollars in value. Moreover, 36 percent of Americans reported their packages being stolen more than once in 2020
