The Canadian Fruit Machine

As we all know, in this day and age Canada is one of the strongest advocates of the LGBTQ community, but it wasn’t always like this. In fact, 60 years ago, The Canadian government hired a professor to work on creating a ‘gaydar’ machine, which they called the ‘Fruit Machine’.

The professor in charge of creating this strange machine, Frank Robert Wake of Carleton University, had forced students to assist and watch same-sex adult films while he analyzed their perspiration levels, measured pupil dilatation, and pulse just to find out how ‘fruity’ the subjects were.

This program was created as a method to identify and remove homosexuals from civil service positions back in the day. After a few years of working on this project, the funding was cut off. Even so, the Canadian government managed to gather data from more than 9,000 suspected homosexuals.
