Another episode of NPR’s This American Life presented a married couple, Esther and Paul Grachan. One day, soon after the two started their relationship, while Paul was paying for a sandwich he ordered, he saw his then-girlfriend’s name written in pencil on a dollar bill.
He ended up not using that bill, as he thought it was appropriate to keep it, frame it, and gift it to his girlfriend. She was very surprised and shocked when she saw the bill, but she decided not to tell him that she was the one that wrote on that bill.
A few years later, after they got married, they came across the framed dollar while moving homes. Esther then told her husband that she was the one that wrote her name on that bill and a few others, while she was suffering after a breakup.
At that time, she really believed she would marry the man that brought back the dollar, and eventually, she did. Of course, he was very shocked when he heard the story, even though he had to wait a few years to hear it.
She felt it wouldn’t be best to tell him the story when he found the bill because they barely knew each other back then and she didn’t want to scare him off. However, she knew instantly he was the one!
