The Hubble Space Telescope has been working for more than six years on calculating the speed at which the universe is expanding, and they recently discovered the most accurate measurement. The only inconvenience, however, is that the rate is in direct conflict with the measurements of the universe’s early expansion.
That’s bad news for the science world because it means we know even less than we used to back in the day, so the universe is still a mystery for us to date. As lead researcher, Adam Riess, a Nobel Laureate and Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at Johns Hopkins University, “The community is really grappling with understanding the meaning of this discrepancy.”
