We’ve all been through annoyingly long sessions of hiccupping and have tried all sorts of methods to make them stop, including drinking some water, holding our breath or pull on the tongue (yeas, that’s a thing too). Sadly, nothing seems to work, at least not when we want it to.
Despite the abundant information on the internet, there’s actually no conclusive research on how to cure hiccups. That’s because serious cases of hiccups are rare, and the mild cases don’t last very long and don’t usually pose a threat to your health.
Severe hiccups can be treated with antipsychotics like haloperidol, vagus nerve stimulation, digital rectal massage, but it’s not like you can do any of these by yourself. So, if you find yourself disrupted by hiccups, stick to the harmless solutions your grandmother told you about and let researchers do their work. Hopefully, they’ll come up with a solution at some point.
