Before returning to India, Gandhi studied to become an attorney at the University of London. Practicing in India was not as easy as Gandhi initially thought, that’s why he moved to South Africa two years later, where he built his practice and stayed for more than 21 years.
He returned to India back when he was 45 years old because he wanted to fight discrimination and improve civil rights. In 1991, he became the leader of the Indian National Congress where he focused on launching campaigns to eliminate poverty and expand civil rights in the country.
According to listverse.com, “The following year, he was arrested for civil disobedience and sedition when a protest he organized turned violent. Twenty-two people were killed, deeply affecting Gandhi and his way of thinking.”
Gandhi spent six years behind bars, and soon after he was released, he got back to his role advocating peaceful protest. The fact that he promoted nonviolence contributed to massive anti-colonial movements.
He also marched 250 miles (450 km) in 1930 with the Dandi Salt March as a protest against unfair tax in the country. Gandhi broke a lot of rules during his lifetime, but he did it for things he really believed in, and even though he was imprisoned several times for it, his actions changed the world.
