9. Sony Betamax

Sony first introduced the Betamax home video recorder in 1975, thus losing the race to being the first company to have such products available in stores, to the JVC company and its VHS player. They both recorded and play back TV shows and movies, but what made them different was more important.

While Sony had to offer a better picture, VHS brought other things to the table. Betamax was able to record only 60 minutes, while VHS tapes could record a whole movie or two hours. Also, VHS licensed JVC, something Sony didn’t think of.
