Following the resounding success of the Sony Walkman portable cassette player, there were a number of portable electronic devices introduced in the early 1980s, including the Seiko TV watch. This device, which was certainly well ahead its time, looked like a normal watch, but it had a built-in 1.2-inch LCD screen.
It was mainly assumed that you can watch TV using this device exactly as you would at home. And also it had an FM radio tuner. But the problem was that the watch had to be connected to a pocket-sized TV/radio tuner to work. In addition, it also needed separate headphones to hear the sound.
The price was also an issue, being $495. So, it’s no surprise that Seiko TV watch was not a success.
