The Dalai Lama was a CIA spy

You’ve probably heard the conspiracy theory that claimed that the Dalai Lama was a CIA agent, even though he was known as a spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. Dalai Lama was the symbol of Buddhism, enlightenment, inner peace, spirituality, and virtuousness.

At least that’s what we officially know about Dalai Lama. However, various CIA documents that were published by the State Department in 1998 will tell you otherwise. The 14th and current Dalai Lama, and several other Tibetan figures, have received millions of dollars from the CIA.

As data has shown, the CIA had been funding more than 2,100 Tibetans each year with $500,000, while Dalai Lama is known to have received $180,000 annually. Why? Well, everything was part of a US intelligence effort to weaken Communist China. Therefore, the US government used Tibetans in their fight with China.

The CIA stopped funding Tibetans in the 1970s, after President Nixon started opening up more about the country’s relationship with China, in order to improve it.

As data has shown, the main goal of the CIA’s program was to “keep the political concept of an autonomous Tibet alive within Tibet and among foreign nations, principally India, and to build a capability for resistance against possible political developments inside Communist China.”

Additionally, the Dalai Lama also wrote in his autobiography that he believes the cutting off of the funding was “a reflection of their anti-Communist policies rather than genuine support for the restoration of Tibetan independence.”
