The Columbia Basin pygmy rabbit

The Columbia Basin pygmy rabbit is the smallest rabbit breed and one of the most endangered in the world. True to its name, the smallest rabbit species is the Columbia Basin pygmy rabbit— which weights less than a pound and measures from 9.3 and 11.6 inches long.

It is one of the most threatened species too. Fewer than 50 have been found in the wild as of 2001. Although the species once existed all around the northwest of the United States, its range is now limited to the state of Washington. The principal explanation for the extinction of the pygmy rabbits is the degradation of their sagebrush habitat on a large scale. They depend on sagebrush for food and shelter.
