Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment

The Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male was a terrifying experiment that infected people with the disease only to provide them free treatment later on. 600 men were part of the project between 1932 and 1972, 399 suffering from latent Syphilis, and 201 as a control group.

The patients were monitored by Doctor of the U.S. Public Health Service, and they received only placebos (aspirin and mineral supplements) instead of proper medication for the disease that should contain penicillin. The scientists wanted to understand how the disease spreads in the human body and what are the effects.

The experiment resulted in 28 people dying from Syphilis, 100 died because of related complications and more than 40 spouses carried the disease and passed it to their children at birth. In 1997, President Clinton apologized publicly to the survivors and their families, stating “The United States government did something that was wrong—deeply, profoundly, morally wrong… It is not only in remembering that shameful past that we can make amends and repair our nation, but it is in remembering that past that we can build a better present and a better future.”

Two-headed dogs

Vladimir Demikhov is a famous name in the medical field. He was a surgeon that helped medical science to evolve with his experiments and studies, especially in the field of organ transplant and coronary surgery. He was the first doctor that ever executed a successful coronary artery bypass operation on an animal.

However, leaving aside his successful findings, Demikhov also did some horrible experiments that will give you nightmares. One of the most disturbing experiments he ever did was the famous two-headed dog. Demikhov took the head, shoulders, and front legs on a puppy and stitched them onto the neck of a German Shepard.

The intervention was considered a successful one, as both dogs had the ability to move around independent of each other. However, they didn’t survive very long because of tissue rejection. The famous surgeon created 20 such two-headed dogs, and the longest survival period was one month. The experiment is totally unethical and very cruel, but their purpose was to innovate organ transplants in humans.
