To sum it up, most pandemics do not last more than 2 to 3 years, however, their effects can and will be devastating, even if the virus mutates, creating a less virulent and aggressive pathogen. This, together with the population that can slowly gain immunity (be it from going through the disease and creating antibodies, or getting vaccinated) can end up becoming the end of a pandemic.
This is what happened in 1918 when influenza created the flu strain that killed so many people and everyone hopes this will be the outcome of the COVID-19 pandemic as well. The only thing we can do is wait and see how the situation continues to develop, and hope for the best.
