Why is there SARS in one of the names?
SARS in the name SARS-CoV-2 means severe acute respiratory syndrome. It is caused by a coronavirus, SARS-associated coronavirus, to be more precise (SARS-CoV). In February 2003, there have been reported many cases of respiratory diseases in Asia. After some time, the illness started to spread to many regions from Europe, South America and North America. This illness ended after a few months, in 2004.
It has been discovered that the coronavirus that is responsible for causing Covid-19 is like the one that caused the SARS-CoV-1 epidemic in 2003. The new variant, SARS-CoV-2, has the power to spread more quickly than the one before. Today, even the asymptomatic people can infect other people with the virus.
