Burnout.
Since there were so many COVID-19 cases in the United States, and the whole world for that matter, hospitals had to work with limited beds and healthcare workers. COVID-19 increased the workload on healthcare workers and physicians and increased burnout.
“A Medscape survey released in September 2020 of 7,500 doctors globally highlights just how bad physician burnout has become during the pandemic. Of the total doctors, 5,000 practiced in the United States, and 64 percent of these physicians said the pandemic intensified their sense of burnout.”
The high level of stress has been caused by treating numerous patients each day, some of which couldn’t make it, being exposed to the virus, and having to wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE). Many of them ended up contracting the virus.
Overworked healthcare professionals should be considered a dangerous society issue, as we need them healthy in order to be able to do their jobs.
