Substance use and overdose deaths also increased.
A December 2020 statement released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shown that there have been more than 81,000 drug overdose deaths in the United States in one year, from May 2019 to May 2020. These numbers are very concerning, as it is the highest number ever recorded in overdose deaths per year in America’s history.
As data has shown there was:
- 26.5 percent increase in deaths caused by cocaine
- 34.8 percent increase in deaths caused by psychostimulants, including methamphetamine
- 98 percent increase of deaths caused by synthetic opioid in western states
A Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) study also showed that 18.2 of its participants reported substance use during the COVID-19 pandemic.
