How many senses do people possess?
We’ve often heard researchers talk about humans having five senses: touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing. As it turns out, we’ve actually got nine or more senses, some neurologists claiming there are around 14 to 20 senses.
The explanation is that each “classical” sense incorporates other senses. For instance, touch includes “somatic” senses, such as thermoception – the perception of heat, nociception – the perception of pain and equilibrioception – the perception of balance. The chemical senses refer to physiological experiences which alert you of your body’s internal condition, such as hunger or thirst.
