When you hear about cool and futuristic guns your first thoughts are probably about science fiction movies where these guns couldn’t possibly exist. Well, you’d be surprised to know that some of these futuristic weapons do in fact exist.

These 6 futuristic weapons may seem like a work of science fiction, but, in fact, they are real-life weapons.

1. XM-25 grenade launcher

This grenade launcher is equipped with a laser rangefinder and on-board computer. It also has a magazine of four 25mm projectiles.

The Army hopes to arm every infantry squad and Special Forces unit with at least one of this grenade launcher.

2. The Maars system

It’s an armed robot that can be equipped with four grenade launchers and a machine gun that packs 400 rounds of 7.62 caliber ammunition.

But its manufacturers like to point out the fact that instead of being equipped with lethal armaments, it can also work with tear gas canisters, smoke grenades, and smoke bombs.

Three such robots were deployed to Iraq last year.

3. The Active Denial System

It can fire a beam of millimeter-wave radiation. It can inflict a burning sensation to people’s skin, but without any permanent damage. But there is still some work to be done regarding its effectiveness.

If it rains, the water droplets will disperse the beam, so the feeling on the skin will be of warmth and somewhat refreshing. If it’s too hot, the cooling system it’s at risk of giving out.

4. Taser Shockwave

Very good against angry mobs. Let’s say this is the less-lethal equivalent of a Claymore mine. With just a push of a button (that’s obviously big and red) the Taser Shockwave will fire 24 electrified probes at the same time in a single direction.

5. Laser Avenger

This is a cannon that is designed to take down incoming aircraft. Boeing confirmed that the Avenger has been used to successfully destroy 50 different improvised explosive devices during tests.

6. Drones

Drones are by far the most controversial weapon in the war on terror. There are voices that argue drones are deeply feared by the Taliban, because they’ve killed so many Al Qaeda and Taliban leaders. Sadly, drones also killed a lot of civilians too.

On the other side, they are far more cost effective than supersonic fighter jets. And while Predators can pack two Hellfire missiles, their big brothers, Reapers, can hold four Hellfires and two 500-pound bombs.
