5. The Ice in the Sannikov Strait

As all the images above, this one is also acquired with the Operational Land Imager on Landsat 8 and it was taken on November 23, 2018. Here we can see the North of Mainland Siberia, some islands which protrude from the Arctic Ocean. These New Siberian Islands stretch 30,000 square kilometers and are bisected by the Sannikov Strait. The Strait connects the Laptev Sea in West with the East Siberian Sea in East.

Mostly, the Sannikov Strait is filled with ice and in the image above, we can see that the Summer melting season is underway. The different colors that the ice has in this image represent the diversity in the ice thickness.
