A planet made out of diamonds?
The “super-Earth” 55 Cancri planet used to be called the ‘Diamond’ planet for a while. 55 Cancri is twice the size of our planet, located 18 days, 40 million light-years away from us in the Cancer constellation.
55 Cancri is very close to its star, its proximity actually contributing to one of its most amazing features, which is temperature. The “super-Earth” 55 Cancri planet is 4,900 degrees Fahrenheit, or 2,700 degrees Celcius, so just imagine that mixed with the planet’s density.
These figures made scientists suspect that 5 Cancri was made of carbon, in the form of diamonds and graphite. Even though this theory turned out to be false, it’s still pretty amazing when you think about it.
