Armpit lumps are also common after the COVID-19 vaccination. Lymphadenopathy, or otherwise known as the swelling of the lymph nodes, can occur both in the arm and in the neck, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control And Prevention (CDC) on the Moderna vaccine.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), swollen lymph nodes are likely to occur in the hand where you’ve received the shot, and this could happen for all vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson).
But according to Purvi Parikh, MD, an immunologist with Allergy & Asthma Network and a co-investigator on COVID-19 vaccine trials at NYU, this side effect is usually short-term, so the swelling shouldn’t last more than a day or two. Also, it is a common side effect and there’s no reason to worry.
Swelling tends to happen because the vaccine activates the immune cells present in your lymph nodes, and it occurs in the armpit because that’s the closest area to the injection site, Parikh added.
