Alcohol could contribute to harsher vaccine side effects.

No matter how happy you might feel about your COVID-19 vaccination, you should postpone celebrations for a few days. According to Tania Elliott, MD, a clinical instructor of medicine at NYU Langone Health, the most common vaccine side effects include headaches, body aches, muscle pain, fatigue, nausea, and chills. Well, alcohol could make all these side effects even worse, so you might want to stay away from it.

In fact, if you think about it, most vaccine side-effects look like the symptoms of a hangover, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Therefore, these symptoms could become even worse when you drink alcohol after vaccination.

As Jagadeesh Reddy, MD, an infectious disease specialist with Providence Mission Hospital has explained, it would be recommended to avoid alcohol for 48 to 72 hours after each vaccine dose because this is when most side-effects tend to occur.

Elliot recommends focusing on rest and hydration, and you can celebrate safely a few days after that.
